Zakat Distribution at ICVA

As part of our sacred duty to serve the Muslim community, we offer financial assistance through the responsible and Shariah-compliant distribution of Zakat al-Mal. Your zakat reaches eligible individuals and families in need—those facing hardship with food, housing, utilities, medical expenses, and other essential needs.

What Is Zakat?

Zakat is one of the five pillars of Islam—a mandatory act of worship and a purification of wealth. It is not charity; it is an obligation upon every eligible Muslim to purify their income and assets and uplift those less fortunate.

How Much Is Zakat?

The standard zakat amount is 2.5% of your qualifying wealth that has been held for one full lunar (Hijri) year. This includes:

  • Cash on hand and in bank accounts
  • Gold and silver
  • Investment assets (stocks, crypto, etc.)
  • Business inventory
  • Rental income and savings

Zakat al-Fitr

Zakat al-Fitr ensures that those in need within our community can celebrate Eid with dignity and joy. This vital obligation allows countless families to experience the blessings of Eid without worry or hardship.

🕌 What Is Zakat al-Fitr?

Zakat al-Fitr is a mandatory charity given by every Muslim (who can afford it) at the end of Ramadan—before the Eid al-Fitr prayer. It serves to purify your fast from any shortcomings and ensures the poor can enjoy Eid along with the rest of the community.

👤 Who Must Pay It?

  • Every Muslim who possesses more than their basic needs for themselves and their dependents on the night and day of Eid.
  •  The head of the household pays Zakat al-Fitr on behalf of all their dependents, including spouse, children, and others under their care.

💰 Amount

Zakat al-Fitr is a donation of measured volume of staple foods or its equivalent value given to the poor and needy at the end of Ramadan. FYI: Sa’a is a measurement of volume not weight. Each particular grain has a different weight by volume.

Estimated amount for 2025:
➡️ $12 per member of the family

🕒 When Should It Be Paid?

  • Best Time: it must be paid before the Eid Prayer on the Eid al-Fitr *in order to ensure timely distribution to the poor and needy, ICVA begins collecting the amount due from members during the last two weeks of Ramadan.
  • Recommended Time: During the last few days of Ramadan to allow for timely distribution to the needy.
  • If paid after the Eid prayer, it is counted as regular charity (ṣadaqah) and not Zakat al-Fitr.

🎯 Purpose:

  • Purifies your fast from idle talk and mistakes.
  • Provides food and support to the poor so they can celebrate Eid without hardship.
  • Strengthens the bonds of community and ensures no one is left behind on this joyous day.
